Upon returning to San Diego, she worked for the summer and then enrolled in San Diego State College. After completing her sophomore year, she decided to take a position as secretary to the head of the curriculum department for the San Diego County schools. She was also very active in her church youth group at this time, which is where she met my Dad (Charles Ellwood Cowell, Jr., aka Chuck). He was serving in the Marine Corps in the South Pacific during World War II and was on leave in San Diego. They were married on June 1, 1946. They spent their honeymoon at California's scenic Lakes Arrowhead and Big Bear.
