After graduating from high school in 1942, Mom and her mother moved to San Diego where her brothers Richard and Jerry were already working. She enrolled in vocational school but they immediately asked her to go to work for them. She worked first in their warehouse, and then as a school secretary for a year. She experienced her first earthquake while working at the school and remembers it quite well! Following this, she decided to enroll in college. She had scholarships to both the University of Wyoming and Phillips University in Enid, Oklahoma. She chose Phillips because its affiliation with her church (Disciples of Christ). Though she enjoyed Phillips, she greatly missed her friends and family in San Diego, so she moved back to San Diego after her first year.
